Pizza is one of the foods many people miss when they transition to a lower carb lifestyle. I was no different. While I have managed to come up with several keto crust recipes that are enough to satisfy my cravings while keeping it keto-friendly, they don't replace the ease of ordering it from a local take-out place.

But now, FreshSlice is breaking the traditional mould and catering to low-carbers with their new cauliflower crust pizza. I almost fell on the floor when I saw this in a flyer. I thought it was too good to be true, like maybe it would be ridculously expensive, made with terrible ingredients, or just not good enough to bother. As such, I made it my mission to take it for a test spin and see how it is, and check out any other keto-friendly items they might have.

FreshSlice Keto-Friendly Pizza: First Impressions

When I called up to make my order, I asked what the ingredients were in the cauliflower crust since they don't have that info publicly available (hence why I was a little suspicious). While they couldn't release the exact spices, the person I spoke with said the main ingredients were cauliflower, cheese and eggs, which is similar to cauliflower crusts you might make at home. I was worried that they might use gluten flour to improve the crust texture, which is low-carb, but not great for many people's guts. Happily, theirs is gluten-free, as well as being low-carb. Lastly, their cheese is all from the Canadian dairy industry, which is reassuring since American imports are often lower quality. I was satisfied with their responses about their ingredients and made my order.

As you would expect, you do pay a premium when you opt for the cauliflower crust, and you can't get the main coupon offerings that apply to their standard crust, nor can you get it by the slice. Of course, I didn't expect to that to be the case since it's a specialty item. It costs $17.99 for a standard medium pizza, $3 more than a regular one. I took advantage of the option to have a half and half pizza so I could try two of their different feast pizza types, which costs no extra than getting a single one.

FreshSlice Cauliflower Crust Pizza and Baked Wings

FreshSlice Pizza Cauliflower Crust Review

This is the info you really want to know. Is the crust any good? I'm happy to report that it's totally worth buying, all things considered.

The FreshSlice cauliflower crust has a thin, soft dough texture. It's unlike any cauliflower crust I've ever made myself. I've tried recipes that are heavy and thick, using more cheese than I like, or they have an eggy taste due to an over-reliance on eggs to hold it together.

My own personal favourite cauliflower crust pizza that I have come up with is thin and lighter, but it has a crispy texture rather than a more traditional doughy texture. Even with the thinner crust, it still holds its shape well enough to each your pizza slices with your hands, which is often not the case with other cauliflower crust pizza recipes I've tried. While the FreshSlice version is a little heavier than mine, which uses less cheese, I still quite like it and give it two thumbs up.

FreshSlice Feast Pizza Specialty Topping Offerings

Most pizza types are keto-friendly as long as the crust is low-carb, but some types will maximize the proteins and fats so you get a more filling pizza for your money. That's why we went for the meat-lover's pizza and the butter chicken pizza (a staple in Surrey where we live).

The Meat Lover's pizza comes with their zesty tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, bacon, sausage, beef and ham. Their butter chicken pizza comes with a creamy white garlic sauce, mozzarella, grilled chicken breast, red peppers, cheddar and butter chicken sauce. Both pizza topping types were tasty and went well with the cauliflower crust and made for a satisfying meal for two, including a box of 8 wings with it. Ok, it also came free with a small package of non-keto brownines, which we also ate, but I assure you we wouldn't get them on a regular day. ;)

FreshSlice Keto-Friendly, Gluten-Free Baked Wings

When you order wings in a restaurant, 90% of the time they are breaded and deep-friend. Depending on how much batter is used, this can add up to a lot of extra carbs, and unhealthy oil on top of that since the batter absorbs the vegetable oils in which 6they are usually fried. This makes the FreshSlice wings so very special for those wanting to eat healthier fast food options... FreshSlice's wings are BAKED and UNBREADED!!!

Yes, that's right. They're the only fast food chain I know of that that does this, making it an unprecedented win not only for people who are eating low-carb, but those who are trying to minimize unhealthy fats too. Of course, low-carbers should avoid the BBQ sauce option, which generally has a lot of sugar, and stick to the hot or plain wings.

The FreshSlice wings have a great texture, despite not being fried, baked to anm appealing golden brown, which gave it a bit of crispiness that allowed the hot sauce to cling to it satisfactorily. You get 8 wings for $8.99, a reasonable price that's lower than you would pay in restaurants, which is a win in my books.

I didn't go for the dips offered, choosing to use ones I had at home to ensure higher quality ingredients, but they have a good few options that sound like they would be relatively keto-friendly, including ranch, marinara, classic ranch, cheesy jalapeno, roasted garlic, ancho chipotle, and, of course, blue cheese. Of these, the ones that may have sugar in them, and therefore more carbs would be the marinara and the ancho chipotle, so if you're getting them and you're concerned about it, be sure to ask about the ingredients.

Overall Impressions of FreshSlice's Low-Carb Offerings

I am so pleased to know that there is a decent low-carb pizza and wing take-out chain in the market. Between that and A&W's lettuce-wrapped grass-fed beef burgers, I'll always know that I can find something when I'm craving keto-friendly versions of old high-carb classic fast food options, or at least on the west coast of Canada. Sadly, they're more common in BC than other provinces, though I did find that they had a location in Calgary and Toronto respectively. Hopefully, they'll keep expanding and their low-carb offerings will be popular enough to keep on their menu long-term. But if you happen to live near one of their locations and are looking for a satisfying low-carb traditional fast food takeout option, be sure to give it a try!
