A friend of mine working in the hair department in the film industry showed up to work with a box a baked goods from Style Me Sweet Bakery & Bistro one day. She opened it up and showed them all to me declaring, “These are all keto.” They looked delicious! She very kindly gave me a slice chocolate brownie cheesecake (4 net carbs, selling for $2.99/piece) which I enjoyed thoroughly, but left me wanting more. I decided to make a special trip out to Langley to sample more of their keto offerings. I was not disappointed.
Style Me Sweet’s Baked Goods
An entire refrigerated display unit in their store is specifically devoted to keto baked goods, all at reasonable prices. Their delicious cheesy garlic biscuits are only 95 cents each. They also have Fathead dough buns for $2.99, which is a little pricey for a plain bun in my book, as well as bagels, but I didn’t try either.
I did, however, try a variety of their sweet baked goods, including their chocolate chip cookie (1.6 net carbs, $1 each), Nanaimo bar (3.2 net carbs, $3.50 each), and lemon bar (2 net carbs, $2 each). They were all delicious, and all quite reasonably priced for the quality and quantity. They also had chocolate cup cakes (2.2 net carbs, $3.50 each or 6 for $20) and peanut butter bars (4 net carbs, $3.50 each), which I didn’t try, but if their other products are any indicator, they’re probably awesome too.
We also tried the low-carb cinnamon buns they sell too, but they’re not made in-house. They get them from another local company called Red Square. They are $4.50 each. They’re fairly big and therefore shareable. They don’t taste like the sickly sweet cinnamon buns you expect from places in the malls, but personally I liked them better. They are more of a high protein bun rather than high fat, and they do have more grams of total carbs (22g) than they have fats (11g), but it would appear that a lot of that is fibre with only 4 net carbs. Check out the provided nutritional info below.
In addition to all their fresh baked goods, they also have a few packaged keto items that you can buy for when you're on the go, including these Choco Rite Bars. They are sweetened with erithrytol and stevia, and have a glycemic index of zero, making them a pretty good choice for diabetics. These are a little higher in carbs than I would like for myself, but because they are also high in fibre, their net carb count is significantly lower. There are mixed opinions on how much fibre carbs count in a keto diet, but these bars are definitely palatable. They sell for $2.75/bar.
Style Me Sweet Low Carb Sandwiches
Style Me Sweet makes fresh sandwiches on demand with the option to have them made on low-carb bread provides by Red Square. The nice thing is that they don’t charge more for choosing the low-carb bread option, and their most of their sandwiches are reasonably priced at $7.95 each. The clubhouse is slightly more at $9.50 and the grilled cheese is slightly less at $6.75 (you can add ham for an extra $1).
We tried both the clubhouse and the grilled pastrami. The Red Square bread used for these sandwiches has a great consistency, unlike they usual keto breads out there, toasted or not. The catch is that they aren’t gluten-free. Theif bread bass doesn’t use wheat flour, but, in combination with ground golden flax meal and coarse rye meal, they do use pure gluten, the protein in wheat flour that gives it its nice chew. This is obviously going to be a problem for anyone who is strictly gluten-free. I have mixed feelings about it. I don’t mind having a little gluten once in a while as a treat so we can eat out and actually order a real sandwich, but I definitely wouldn’t buy the bread and eat it on a regular basis. Like their cinnamon buns, their bread is higher in protein than fat with 6 total carbs (1g net), 12g of protein and 3g of fat. It’s also egg, sugar and dairy-free making the bread suitable for vegan consumption. Loaves are available for purchase on their own for $8/loaf.
Overall Impressions
Our server was lovely and enthusiastic about all their keto offerings, having adopted a keto lifestlye herself. She also crafted our sandwiches skillfully and really cared about how we enjoyed them. Style Me Sweet, so far, is the most reasonably priced keto bakery/restaurant that I’ve visited in the Vancouver area. Langley is a little out of the way, but I would definitely stop by if I’m in the area, pick up some baked goods and treat myself to a lunch while I’m there. Give it a try next time you’re in Langley!
