Lazy meal alert! Not every meal needs to be your magnum opus, sometimes you just want something easy and tasty, and packaged sausages are about as easy as it gets. Green cabbage is one of my veggie staples, and I always keep a few packages of frozen sausages in the fridge for easy meals. Cooking them up with cabbage and red pepper makes it a more of a meal, combined with the spices from down south and you’ve got a soulful combination when you’re stretched for time.

Keto Southern Fried Cabbage & Sausage Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500g sausages, sliced (*I like spicy ones, but any kind will do as long as they’re not sweet.)
  • 2 tablespoons bacon fat, divided (*or butter if bacon fat is unavailable)
  • ½ cup yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 6 cups green cabbage, sliced
  • ½ cup red bell pepper, sliced
  • ½ teaspoon Himalayan pink sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sugar-free Cajun seasoning (Creole also works)

Directions:

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons bacon fat in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and brown, around 2 minutes if they’re pre-cooked, around 4 minutes if they’re not.

  2. Add ¼ cup chicken bone broth and de-glaze the pan. Add onions, garlic, paprika , creole seasoning. Let it simmer for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent any burns.

  3. Add red bell pepper and continue cooking for about 2 minutes.

  4. Add cabbage, worcestershire sauce and white pepper, bring to a simmer, cover and let it cook for about 9 minutes or more depending on preference.

  5. Stir in creole or Cajun seasoning, salt and white pepper and serve.
